About the NIEBNA Board

Board of Directors

NIEBNA operates under the supervision and direction of its Board of Directors (see Current Directors). Directors are elected for one (1) year terms at the NIEBNA Annual Meeting. The Board elects the officers of the corporation (President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary) and will fill seats that become vacant.

While service on the Board is open to all stakeholders in the area, our documents require that at least 80% of the seats be residents.

Board Service

If you are interested in serving on the Board, just mention this at a Board meeting or send an email using the NIEBNA web site Contact Form.

Board Meetings

The Board has scheduled monthly meetings (see 2015 Schedule) usually the 4th Thursday of the month in the early evening. The venue varies including Ginger Hop, Lourdes Church, and Riverplace (Wilde Roast / Mattie’s) since these locations rooms an appropriate size for our meetings. Board meetings are public and everyone is invited to attend and participate.

Note: both the date and the venue are sometimes changed due to schedule conflicts and venue availability – always check the NIEBNA web site Calendar beforehand to verify details.

Note: the August Board is held only if there is presenting business that cannot be delayed until September. Also, the November and December meetings are usually combined into a single meeting in early December. The Board gets to take vacation and celebrate holidays like the rest of us – at least in most years.

Should something come up between Board meetings which cannot wait until the next scheduled meeting, one or more Board members will meet with the requestor informally to discuss the matter; if an immediate Board decision is necessary, the Board can adopt resolution via email vote or hold a special meeting.

Board Agendas

The agenda is determined about 7 to 10 days before the meeting and posted to the NIEBNA web site (see Calendar). However, agenda items can be added and/or dropped right up to the start of the meeting.  Anyone may propose items for the agenda (using the Contact form). Also, anyone may request to make a presentation and/or to solicit support from the Board on any topic of interest. The Board reserves the right to limit the time devoted to any presentation and topic, however.

Board Committees

The Board has no standing committees or subcommittees – most of its business is handled as agenda items at regular Board meetings. Should the Board want to delegate a task to a smaller group, an ad hoc committee is formed for the purpose; usually the Board gives the committee authority to act on behalf of the Board and report results and actions at the next meeting.

Ad Hoc Task Groups

Sometimes matters arise which cannot be handled conveniently in the context Board meetings – for example, larger development projects requiring extended discussion with developers, City staff, the local business community and adjacent neighborhoods. In these cases, the Board creates an ad hoc Task Group to handle the matter. While it will be chaired by a NIEBNA Board member, Task Group members will include Board members, members of the NIEBNA community at large, representatives from adjacent neighborhoods and local businesses, City staff (ex officio), and others.

The Task Group meets with developers, City staff and members of the community as needed to handle the matter. While there is no set schedule for a Task Group, usually there will be multiple meetings over a 4 to 6 month period with the schedule determined by the pace at which the project evolves. In the end the Task Group will make a recommendation for action to the NIEBNA Board and the boards of the other participating organizations. The Task Group is then disbanded.

Grievance Policy

The NIEBNA grievance policy adopted by the Board on April 24, 2014 is available here.
